Migration to new calendar solution

Thursday, June 1st, 2023

It's time to say good bye to eGroupware and welcome to SOGo.
As we outlined in our previous posting, we will be switching to a new calendar solution.
We coordinated with those of you using group calendars and have migrated those already. Now it's time to move the individual personal calendars. This cannot be automated and will have to be performed by each user, but of course we're here to assist if needed.
To make the change as easy as possible for you, we have written a readme.
We ask you to complete the migration by the end of August, so that eGroupware can be decommisioned afterwards.
Thanks a lot.

Rethinking groupware

Tuesday, October 12th, 2021

In August of 2010, we introduced our groupware solution for D-PHYS. In the last 11 years the system has served the Department well, but we believe now would be a good time to think about the future of groupware at D-PHYS. Here's an incomplete list of things we noticed over the years:

  • the groupware system seems to get used almost exclusively as a calendar
  • for distributed calendars, the world and people's expectations have changed
  • file and sync formats have come and gone
  • 17 people will have 634 completely orthogonal and incompatible use cases for calendars
  • the product that won our evaluation round in 2010 is not necessarily the best system for 2021

We have sampled the market and test-installed several candidates, but since our humble ISG-internal calendar only covers one very specific use case, we strongly encourage you to give us your feedback so that the next D-PHYS calendar solution will suit you well. In particular, we're interested in learning

  • are you using any other egroupware module(s) aside from the calendar? If you don't tell us about it now, a potential replacement may not have this functionality!
  • what's your current calendar use case? Just a personal calendar? A group calendar? In which configuration?
  • what's your desired calendar use case? This might be the most interesting thing to learn...
  • which sync protocols/devices are you using?
  • what other software/products/services have you been/are you using?

If you would like to help make sure the next evolution in distributed D-PHYS calendars is a success, please join our Matrix room and participate! Thanks a lot.

Groupware upgrade

Thursday, July 14th, 2016

On Thursday, July 21, starting at 0700 we will upgrade our groupware solution. The update is expected to take approximately one hour. As this upgrade will be a major one (version 14.3 to 16.1), you might notice a few changes. In particular:

  • if you didn't log out before we start the upgrade, your browser might be in an inconsistent state and the new version might refuse to work. Just log out manually in this case.
  • if you're using the ActiveSync/eSync/Exchange protocol for calendar synchronization, you will have to recreate your sync account on your (mobile) device. Just delete your existing account on the device (your groupware data will still be on our server) and add it again (see documentation). We're sorry for the inconvenience, but the synchronization code was rewritten to be faster and more stable and is not compatible to existing accounts. We have tried to identify all current ActiveSync users and will inform them via email.
  • the web interface will get a new look (see screenshot)

We have thoroughly tested the new version internally. If you find any problems after the upgrade, please get in touch. Thanks.

Update Thursday 08:00: Upgrade complete. Please let us know if you find any issues in the new version.

D-PHYS Groupware

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Today we are pleased to announce the D-PHYS eGroupware collaborative calendar solution http://groupware.phys.ethz.ch. We have put a lot of effort into the task of finding a groupware package that works with as many different clients as possible and offers the widest range of features. So if a synchronized calendar service could be interesting for you, give it a shot. Please also consult our readme detailing the different sync solutions.

If you're still using our much older https://webcal.phys.ethz.ch/, please move on to eGroupware as soon as possible. This service will eventually be discontinued.

eGroupWare update

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Tomorrow Wednesday Dec 09, starting at 0730, we will upgrade our eGroupWare collaboration software (https://groupware.phys.ethz.ch/) to a new revision. The service will be down for about 30 min. The update addresses several known issues and should restore the SyncML functionality.
