Beware of phishing e-mails

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Of course 'UPGRADE YOUR ETHZ E-Mail-Konto.' is a phishing attempt. And not a bad one at that. The German is halfway correct and they even used different From: and Reply-To: addresses. But still: no administrator worth her title would ever ask for a password. Please delete.

RAM upgrade for LTSP Terminal Server

Monday, April 6th, 2009

On Wednesday, April 8, starting around 0730 we will upgrade the RAM in plimpy, our LTSP terminal server. This will cause a downtime of about 5 min and the loss of all open sessions. Please make sure to have all your data saved by Tue evening if you're working on a thin client.

Update Wed 0800: plimpy now has 16 gigs.

Easier reactivation of expired computers

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

All computers in the D-PHYS network have to be registered with their MAC address. This is an important measure to ensure the security and integrity of our network. In order to alleviate the inconvenience this might cause in some cases, we now allow expired machines to be reactivated not only by us, but also by their admins and deputies. To this end we have created the website

registration.phys.ethz.ch

which allows you to easily reactivate all expired machines you're registered as an admin or deputy for. We hope to save us all some time with this new service.

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Tell us what you think!

Friday, February 27th, 2009

We are service providers, and you are our customers. In order to be able to offer the best IT service possible, it is important for us to know what your needs and requirements are.

We therefore invite you to take this opportunity to tell us what we're good at, but especially what we still have to improve to best meet your IT needs. You can use the paper ballots outside of HPT D 19 or write an e-mail to isg@phys.ethz.ch, and you can participate either anonymously or provide your name if you want us to get back to you.

We explicitly invite our D-PHYS students to tell us your opinion! Do we offer what you need in your daily student life? Please let us know.

Thanks in advance for sharing your ISG experience with us. We'll pay heed to what you say!

Be aware of phishing e-mails

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Currently a great number of phishing e-mails are flooding the intarwebs, not all of which are being discarded by our spam filters.

Please remember that neither we nor ETH Informatikdienste would ever ask you to provide your account data, let alone via e-mail. Never ever send this information to anyone.

These e-mails are pretty well written, but sender addresses like <info@account.com> and <accountupgrade@j-mail.info> should make all your alarm bells go off.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Real hardware random numbers

Monday, January 12th, 2009

our RNG hardware
Inspired by an article in German computer magazine c't and Oliver Lau's accompanying software we now provide an interface that supplies hardware-generated random numbers for your everyday randomness needs - be it simulations or seeding your RNG algorithms. The random numbers are generated from the dark noise of a USB webcam and pass all standard RN tests like DIEHARD et al.

Roundcube webmail upgrade

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Tomorrow Thursday Jan 8 at 0730 we will upgrade our popular Roundcube webmail solution to a new version. This will cause a downtime of about 30 min. By way of consolation, we will provide a new theme that looks pretty nice. Look out for it in Personal settings -> User preferences -> Interface skin. It's called mvision2.

Update: Thursday 0745 - update done

Windows logins from any D-PHYS Linux box

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Some weeks back we announced Windows logins on our Linux thin clients. If you're on one of our regular Linux machines and still would like to use some Windows-only program from time to time, you can of course get the same functionality by running rdesktop directly.
Please read our wiki page to learn how this is done.
