• All customer webshares (dedicated websites and webapps)
• D-PHYS shop and Experimente

Important changes for website owners

All website owners: If you are a website owner/admin, please join our new Matrix room #web:phys.ethz.ch, to get support and news. After the upgrade, please check your websites for problems.

Python WSGI app owners: All WSGI apps have been switched to use a virtual environment to pin the currently used Python package versions. We encourage you to review and upgrade your dependency versions (via requirements.txt) after the server upgrade. Please read our new WSGI documentation for details.

Update 07:00 All web services are back online.

Tomorrow Wednesday 2021-01-20 starting at 06:00 we will upgrade the server hardware hosting most of our web services. We expect them to be back by 08:00 at the latest.

Affected web services

The following services are unavailable during the downtime:

• Most ISG websites (news, readme, wiki)
• All customer webshares (dedicated websites and webapps)
• All groupshare and personal homepages (public_html)
• Web databases (on sqlweb.phys.ethz.ch)
• D-PHYS shop and Experimente
• D-PHYS GitLab
• Chat (Matrix, Element, Jitsi)

Our Debian, Ubuntu and Raspbian mirror as well as Grafana, InfluxDB and Webmail will not be affected.

We will not be able to send any status updates via our news blog or via our Matrix news and status rooms.

With the migration of the 'personal' web sites completed we're now addressing regular web shares. The easy ones have already been moved to the new web server and we're now asking share owners to prepare for migration. We will perform the migration for you, but your web site has to be ready for the environment on the new server (PHP 7 or Python 3 in particular). We're currently planning to power off the old web server at the end of 2019, so if you haven't migrated by then, your site will be offline. Please work with us to keep this deadline.

Update 10:15 - migration done, please let us know if you experience any problems.

After 11(!) years of loyal service, the current D-PHYS web server hardware will be retired in 2019 and all web sites hosted by ISG will migrate to new hardware. We will take the opportunity to reorganize the way we host web sites and improve the general setup of the web server.

In a first step, we will migrate the 'personal' web sites (those residing in public_html/ in a home directory or group share) on Wednesday, 17.7.2019. We have extensively tested the new setup, and unless you're using dynamic content in your public_html folder (like PHP or other CGI scripts), you should not notice anything. With CGIs, there's a slight chance we might have overlooked something, so please test your dynamic content after that date and get in touch if you see a problem.

The regular web sites hosted by us will be successively moved to the new hardware at a later time and we will get in touch with their owners should it be necessary.

Note that this will not affect the department website in any way as that one is hosted on the CMS of Informatikdienste.

On Thursday, January 19, starting at 08:00, we will OS upgrade the main D-PHYS web server. All websites hosted on zwoelfi*.ethz.ch will be down for several hours and will gradually come back as we progress. This does not affect the department website, the institutes and many of the group websites. However our groupware, the wikis and many special interest sites will be inaccessible. Note that if you're using the ActiveSync connector via groupware to sync email to your cell phone or Outlook, this won't work either. Temporarily use webmail while we bring back groupware as one of the first services.

Update 17:30 - due to an inordinate amount of user files on the web server the upgrade took a bit longer than anticipated. Now almost all websites should be back online, please let us know if you encounter any problems.

On Thursday, the 27th of August 2009 around 16:00 we will start upgrading the operating system and the webserver software of our main webserver zwoelfi. This may lead to a downtime of many websites at D-PHYS including www.phys.ethz.ch and isg.phys.ethz.ch. Update 21:20: All services should be back to normal again.
