New Firefox for D-PHYS managed Systems
Security Posted by Gürkan Sengün on Monday February 26, @02:35PM
from the old-version-not-supported-any-longer dept.
On 28 February, 2007 we will upgrade our Firefox 1.5.0.x to the new Firefox 2.0.0.2. This will be done on the ISG-managed Linux, Mac OS X and Windows workstations.

Note that Firefox 1.5.0.x will only be maintained with security and stability updates until 24 April, 2007. We recommend anybody else to also upgrade to Firefox 2.

As you can remember we plan to remove Mozilla since it's not actively maintained anymore, as announced on September 23, 2005. It will be removed on our D-PHYS Linux machines by 2 March, 2007.

Mozilla has been rewritten in C and is now called 'Seamonkey'

We are absolutely aware of the Seamonkey project, although AFAIK it's only the continuation by other maintainers than before and not a rewrite at all. Mozilla also was written in C (on the lowest abstraction level). But as long as there seems to be no need and we don't have security support, we'll just remove it.

With the next generation of our Linux Workstations, which are planned to be based on Debian 4.0 Etch, Seamonkey will probably be available anyway since Etch includes Seamonkey or rather — due to license restrictions — the debranded version named Iceape.
