  New Mozilla, Firefox and Thunderbird
Linux Posted by Gürkan Sengün on Friday September 23, @09:21AM
from the configuration-file-clean-up dept.
During the weekend we will install the latest versions of Firefox (Webbrowser) and Thunderbird (Mailclient) on the DPHYS3 Linux workstations.

This means that in half a year you shouldn't be using Mozilla anymore but Firefox and Thunderbird. Mozilla is no longer under active development and Firefox / Thunderbird are its successors.

On sunday evening, we will kill any hanging Firefox or Thunderbird to activate the new versions.

First time you start Firefox or Thunderbird, it will create a new profile for you. Everything should be preconfigured and you can surf the web and read your mails without hassle.

  • You are a Mozilla user and like to use your old bookmarks in Firefox?

You can migrate your bookmarks from Mozilla to Firefox with the following command: cp ~/.mozilla/default/*/bookmarks.html ~/.mozilla/firefox/*default/

  • You are a Mozilla user and like to use your old addressbook in Thunderbird?

You can migrate your addressbook from Mozilla to Thunderbird with the following command: cp ~/.mozilla/default/*/abook.mab ~/.thunderbird/*default/

  • You are a Thunderbird user from the first hour and like to use your old addressbook in our new Thunderbird?

You can migrate your addressbook from the old Thunderbird to the new Thunderbird with the following command: cp ~/.mozilla-thunderbird/*default/abook.mab ~/.thunderbird/*default/

Feel free to contact us if you need assistance.

They are now configured to open postscript documents with gv, and PDF documents with acreread now, by /etc/mailcap. You can override these settings with ~/.mailcap. Read the manpage of mailcap(5).

More general changes with the new DPHYS3 setup are listed here.
