  Virtualization with VirtualBox
Experiences Posted by Christian Herzog on Wednesday March 05, @04:21PM

We are happy to announce the availability of the VirtualBox virtualization solution on all our managed Linux workstations (including the thin clients). If you would like to try the latest BSD release or have a look at a special Linux distro, you might want to give it a go.

Read on for some notes...
We do not provide extensive support for VirtualBox, but here are some hints which could be useful:

  • you need to create a hard disk image that holds the guest file system. These files are typically > 8 Gb in size and hence do not fit into your home directory. You can use the /scratch folder to store them
  • for proprietary operating systems like Windows, make sure you have the relevant license to legally install these sytems
  • you can either use physical CD/DVD drives or image files (ISOs) to install the guest OS from
  • several guest operating system greatly benefit from special drivers which can be installed via Devices -> Install Guest Additions
