Mail Server Downtime due to Software Upgrade
Under Construction Posted by Axel Beckert on Tuesday August 14, @04:39PM
from the no-mails-today-my-server's-gone-away dept.
On Wednesday, 15th of August 2007 between 18:00 and 21:00 we will upgrade the mail server software (Postfix) to a newer version. During that time it may happen that mails cannot be sent over our mail server (mail.phys.ethz.ch) and receiving mails will be delayed. We suggest not to write mails from inside the Department during that time.

Update 20:35: Upgrade done. All mail services seem up and running again.
Update 23:35: SMTP AUTH works again, too.

IMAP and POP3 service will be unaffected. Only mail clients sending mails to the server by SMTP oder any encrypted variant of SMTP will be affected. This includes nearly all Windows and Mac e-mail programs as well as usually also Mozilla Thunderbird. Mail programs relying on a local mail server (aka MTA) won't be affected directly.

Receiving incoming mails will be delayed during the downtime, but those mails will be received later during the night and should be there at last on the next morning.

After the upgrade a feature called Greylisting will be activated. Greylisting will delay mails from outside the ETH for usually a quarter of an hour. There will be no delay for e-mail senders often communicating with the physics department.
