from the most-of-the-D-PHYS-users-are-not-affected dept.
The following information do not affect you, if you only use the mail account at the Department of Physics.
If you are using the mail services of ETH ID, then eventually you need to change some settings before 1st November 2006.
Read on for more informations...
After 1st November 2006 the following hostnames will not work any more:
This change does not affect the access with Outlook to the Exchange server. Details about the client configuration to use the ETH Informatikdienst mail service can be found at E-Mail-Clients.
For sending out e-mail with SMTP the following rules apply now:
- For all mail clients which are State of the Art the hostname mail.ethz.ch should be used. This is possible from everywhere, but can only be done with encryption (TLS) activated and using your NETHZ account to authenticate. On this host a virus scanner is running.
- For mail clients which are not able to send e-mails with encryption the hostname smtp.ethz.ch is available to send mails. This is possible from everywhere, but only without encryption and using your NETHZ account to authenticate. This host will be removed at the end of the year 2007. Users which still are using it will periodically get reminded. On this host a virus scanner is running.
- To send e-mails without any authentication and without any encryption the hostname smtp0.ethz.ch can be used from the ETH network. On this host a virus scanner and also a spam filter is running and the traffic will be inspected.
For receiving e-mail with IMAP or POP following rules apply now:
- For all mail clients which are State of the Art the hostname mail.ethz.ch should be used. This is possible from everywhere, but can only be done with encryption (SSL) activated and using your NETHZ account to authenticate.
- For mail clients which are not able to receive e-mails with encryption the hostname imap.ethz.ch (respectively pop.ethz.ch) is available. This is possible from everywhere, but only without encryption and using your NETHZ account to authenticate. This hosts will be removed at the end of the year 2007. Users which still are using it will periodically get reminded.
Access to webmail and with HTTP is available also through the hostname mail.ethz.ch from everywhere, but only with encryption and authentication.
