  Mailserver under attack
Outage Posted by Beat Rubischon on Monday February 06, @10:37AM
from the spam-spam-spam dept.
Since saturday morning, our mailserver is under heavy attack and was partially not available for receiving mail.

We changed now our setup to allow internal mails without any delay. Home users will still detect delays from up to two minutes while sending mails. They could speed up the delivery by using VPN.

Also the mailserver of ITET is affected and probably also more sites at ETHZ.

We apologize any inconveniences and keep you informed about the situation.

If you are trying to send mail while outside ETH there is another short term solution for many mail reader programs: use SSL instead of TLS to encrypt mail. SSL uses a different port than TLS and currently we are not under attack on the SSL port.

For Thunderbird (and most versions of Mozilla/Netscape) the relevant setting is under the menu "Edit" -> "Account Settings...". For "Outgoing Server (SMTP)..." choose "SSL" instead of "TLS".

FYI: It looks like your mailserver is not accepting mails from our mailserver since about 24 hours. Our queue therefore starts bouncing mails.

Answered by personal mail. It seems that the mailserver of swisslife.ch has quite short timeout settings.
