from the no-work-for-dhcp-clients dept. On Monday, Oct. 17, in the early morning, we will change the IP address of our WINS server (aka NBNS, aka NetBIOS Name Server). Please read on in case you are
WINS is like DNS a service to find computers in a network. Every windows computer or samba server registers itself with the WINS server and queries for names of domain controllers, fileservers and users. More information may be found in the Samba documentation, RFC1001 and RFC1002. The network which contains the current IP address of the WINS server goes back to the pool of free addresses. This forces us to switch the IP address of our WINS server. The new address is 129.132.86.217. Together with the change, we will also serve the new WINS server IP by DHCP. Every client using DHCP will get the new address and you don't need to change anything. In the rare case of manual IP configuration, you will need to enter the new IP address to find our servers. Please inform us about those computers - this will help us during future migrations to NETng. < | >
