  VPN with MacOS X

Using the VPN access of ETHZ is a nice thing to use fileservers or journals from everywhere in the world. It's also needed to use wireless LAN in our campus. But on MacOS X 10.3 you will discover some problems.

The Cisco Clients 3.7 and 4.0 are not working on top of MacOS X 10.3. Don't install them - you will get several error messages and you need to uninstall the client manually.

The incorporated PPTP client of MacOS X don't work out of the box. You need to change a line in a configuration file. A step-by-step instruction is available on Apple's webserver. This approach works nicely but don't forget that the communication between your Mac and the network of ETHZ is not encrypted and you should use only encrypted services.

You need to create a new PPTP connection, servername is vpn.ethz.ch, Account name is your n.ethz.ch login and your password.

Thanks for the link telling me how to use the Apple PTP client. Can you tell me though, what the problem with the Cisco client on MacOS X 10.3 is? The Cisco client works perfectly on my PowerBook running 10.3.

Interesting. In my case, the kernel-module was not loadable. Could you give me the place where you got the client?

I got it from the n.ethz web page

        https://n.ethz.ch/software/vpn/MacOS/MacOSX/

Looking there again today I realize that there is a new version 4.0.3 which I did not try yet. I have successfully installed version 4.0.2 (C)

It seems that most of the time, when you install a new update of the system or reinstall the system, it really destroys the Cisco VPN and it must be reinstalled using its most recent version.

The problem is... when you finds out, you usually really need to connect to the VPN and have something else to do (e.g. you are in another swiss university).

So even if you use the CISCO client, I would keep an unencrypted connection usable (the MacOS one, just in case).
