Access your files over the web

Accessing your mails from everywhere has been possible for a long time over http://webmail.phys.ethz.ch/. Now you can access your files using the same simple method - just go to http://webhome.phys.ethz.ch/.

Everyone knows the problem - you are not in your office, but you need access to one of your files or you like to store a file without carrying a floppy disk. Our webbased filemanager gives you a simple and secure method to access your files from a simple browser.

The communication between the server and your browser is encrypted and you won't transfer your password in cleartext over the net. This is a big advantage over FTP. The known bug with IE preventing you from using ftp with username and password is also no longer a problem with the new tool.

why not install a java ssh client on the webserver? something like www.itp.ethz.ch/ssh which can also be accessed from all systems/os/browesers? you can get an excellent product which i use at:

    http://www.mindbright.se/mindterm/

that would give you *full* accesss to a shell on your account and not just access to mail and (IMHO) cumbersome access to your files. you can test it at

    http://duamutef.ethz.ch/ssh

let me know what you think. cheers, h.

A Java based ssh would be a nice thing - but on the other hand, you'll need a working Java environment which is rare in some internet cafes. You'll also need some UNIX commandline experience.

We'll think about your idea and inform here when a solution is available.

sftp is available on every workstation where you have access with ssh.
