  Servercrash
Outage Posted by Beat Rubischon on Thursday February 20, @12:05PM
from the we-are-working-on-it dept.
The fileserver for the student accounts obstalden had a disk problem last night around 20:30. Read on when you detect problems accessing your files.

Update: 21:30 Service is back.

Several files and directories are corrupted and we decided to restore the backup of yesterday 18:00 on another machine. You may access to your files read-only - read-write access will be enabled in the next few hours.

Update: 21:30 Backup is now restored on a temporary space and you should be able to work as usual. We will give the homes in a few days a new, fast server. There were only about 5 minutes between the last backup and the crash - we assume no data loss. Please feel free to contact us if you miss something.

For the interested people: obstalden, a PIII running Linux, was protected by hardware RAID-5 (AMI MegaRAID). We will do some research in the next days why this could happen - the controller didn't detect any failure and we lost several dozens of blocks on the disks. The last fullbackup was done 48 hours ago and gave us the possibility to restore the whole volume within 8 hours.
