ISG sits on a pile of old hardware that for various reasons cannot be used in our setup any more. Various people have expressed interest in and that still might be useful for certain scenarios (e.g. lab use or tinkering at home). We will therefore host a grab-your-used-piece-of-hardware session with mostly TFT monitors (15" - 19"), a few Mac Pros (2010) and printers, free of charge for ETH-internal use, prices for private use according to the rules: Wed Oct 18 in HPT H floor, between 11:00 - 13:00.
As usual, some rules apply:

• this goes to all D-PHYS members
• no registration necessary. Just come by and take whatever is left.
• all items come as they are. We do not have any details or specifications
• there’s no warranty or service whatsoever. All devices have successfully been turned on, but that’s it
• if your item doesn’t turn on, you can bring it back within 5 days and get a full refund (if it wasn’t free in the first place)
• no OS, no software, no manual, no keyboard, often no cables. You get one piece of hardware. All HDs are blank
• all proceeds go to the D-PHYS funds, not ISG
• bring cash

Please use fatboy.ethz.ch instead until the 17th October 2010 max. The machine has 128 GB of memory and 4 Quadcores (AMD Opteron). You can also use /scratch but please move your data away until 17th October 2010. Please note that you may not use fatboy after this date.

Update Oct 18: the new hardware is installed. Please use plumpy again.

We installed new linux kernels for our systems and the machines need to be rebooted to run the new kernel. We will reboot the D-PHYS Linux Workstation "plimpy" this evening after 06:00 pm, not all the workstations. Please log out this evening before you go home, save all unsaved work and don't start any long running jobs.

The terminal server "plimpy" is affected as well, please save all your open documents and log out from your LTSP terminal. Thank you.

We will upgrade our LTSP server "plimpy" the next Wednesday, 24 June 2009 starting at 7 pm. Please save all your open documents and log out until that time. The machine should be ready again the next morning. You don't have to back up your data on /scratch since we will do that. Find the details on the software changes here.

While performing the upgrade to Debian "lenny" we will switch to a 64 bit kernel since finally also Adobe flash player, the last missing mission-critical app, is now available for 64 bit Linux. Unfortunately Adobe still doesn't ship 64 bit Linux versions of Adobe Reader (formerly Acrobat Reader). You can still fill Adobe Reader PDF forms and even create and edit PDF documents on the Windows RDP Server "ramora" which you can access via the ETH Zurich menu, Microsoft Office (or the full-screen login, see above link).
